Yet for others of us, we become involved more as an act of solidarity. We could try to ignore a problem, but for one reason or another, we have been moved. Our spirits and bodies have touched another and we've been transformed. A mentor of mine, who I had always thought of as a great champion of social justice, once confessed to me that he was not particularly moved by issues in the abstract. But once he had met someone affected by a problem, and heard their story, working as a humble partner with them to confront the challenge became a natural Christian response.
Whether you are moved to act by immediate proximity or through encountering divine disclosures in the faces of others (which are sometimes an act of revelation!), I pray that each of us will "See. Pray. Act." in such a way that we can be healing presences in an all-too-often callous and hard-hearted world.
Yours in hope,
