This resource is the result of many months of research, preparation, and testing. As our project coordinator the Rev. Peter Laarman has said, "There's nothing like it available anywhere else." The guide is organized into seven sessions, each lasting a projected 90 minutes. The topics include:
- The size and scope of the current mass incarceration regime
- The relation of this system to the longer arc of racial oppression
- The War on Drugs as a war on people of color
- The human and economic costs of the incarceration system
- Bad religion's role in maintaining a punishment-centered system
- Good religion's commitment to reconciliation and restorative justice
- Ways your faith community can contribute to transforming the system.
Additionally, Justice Not Jails has created a detailed facilitator's guide to help make it possible for non-specialists to lead study groups effectively. Special handouts and power points have also been created for each session. We will inform you of upcoming trainings if you are interested in leading a small group in your congregation.
Until it comes,
